The announcement was on the same day the Federal Election Commission was establishing the Gillibrand 2020 Exploratory Committee. Her chief of staff, Jess Fassler, will serve as her campaign manager and the campaign will be headquartered from her hometown of Troy, New York.

Kirsten Gillibrand was born as Kirsten Elizabeth Rutnik, in Albany, New York, on 9 December 1966. Her father is Douglas Paul Rutnik and her mother is Polly Edwina Noonan.
They are both attorneys and her father was also a lobbyist. They divorced in the late 1980s.
