The Senator talked about it in an interview on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert on January 15, 2019. Gillibrand made the news public that she was launching an exploratory committee to run for the Presidency in 2020. She said
“I’m going to run for president of the United States because as a young mom, I’m going to fight for other people’s kids as hard as I would fight for my own.”
The announcement was on the same day the Federal Election Commission was establishing the Gillibrand 2020 Exploratory Committee. Her chief of staff, Jess Fassler, will serve as her campaign manager and the campaign will be headquartered from her hometown of Troy, New York.
If elected, Gillibrand will be only the fourth sitting Senator elected president, amongst the ranks of Warren G. Harding, John F. Kennedy, and Barack Obama.

Kirsten Gillibrand was born as Kirsten Elizabeth Rutnik, in Albany, New York, on 9 December 1966. Her father is Douglas Paul Rutnik and her mother is Polly Edwina Noonan.
They are both attorneys and her father was also a lobbyist. They divorced in the late 1980s.
