Kirsten Gillibrand was born as Kirsten Elizabeth Rutnik, in Albany, New York, on 9 December 1966. Her father is Douglas Paul Rutnik and her mother is Polly Edwina Noonan.

They are both attorneys and her father was also a lobbyist. They divorced in the late 1980s.

In terms of her siblings, she has an older brother named Douglas Rutnik and also a younger sister named Erin Rutnik Tschantret. She is of mixed ethnicity consisting of English, Austrian, Scottish, German, and Irish ancestry.
