Tennell was only two years old when she started learning to skate after begging her mother to let her try he sports. In 2007, Denise Myers became her coach.
In 2013 U.S Championships, she grabbed the novice bronze medal. Later, in the following year, she moved up to the junior ranks and placed herself in the fourth position in 2014 U.S. Championships.
Tennell made her debut on the ISU Junior Grand Prix series in September 2p14 bagging 8th position in Nagoya, Japan. Tennell won the junior gold medal at the 2015 U.S. championships with over 16 points. In May 2015, Tennell was diagnosed with a stress fracture and wore a back brace the whole summer.
On January 23, 2016, Tennell placed 6th position at the senior level at 2016 U.S. Championships in St. Paul, Minnesota and later was assigned to the 2016 World Junior Championships in Debrecen.
In the senior international debut, she successfully grabbed the bronze medal at the 2016 CS Tallinn Trophy and finished 9th position at the senior level at the 2017 U.S Championships.
Tennell bagged the bronze medal in November 2017 at her sole Grand Prix assignment and third in the free skate. She placed first in 2018 U.S. Figure Skating Championship and won the competition with the combined score of 219.52.
Tennell successfully listed her name in one of the three named to the U.S. women’s Olympic figure skating team to represent the United States. She made her Olympic debut when she grabbed her best score of the season, 68.94.
